Casual Academics

Induction for casuals

To assist you with getting started as a casual employee of UTS, the Human Resources Unit has online induction materials for casual academics.

Alternatively, you may obtain a copy of the CD-ROM Casual Academics: UTS:Getting started from your Faculty.

Learning and Teaching development for casuals

New casual academics are invited to participate in the IML orientation sessions run at the start of each semester. The next orientation is scheduled for February, 2007.

IML runs Faculty-based workshops for casuals by request, usually towards the beginning of semester. Casuals are informed about these workshops by their Faculty. Typical workshops focus on topics such as Tutorial interaction, Assessment, Groupwork, Student learning or Facilitating online learning.

Workshops or discussion sessions can also be facilitated for course or large subject teams including casual and full-time academics. If you would like to request a workshop on a particular topic, please discuss this with your Subject or Course Co-ordinator or Head of School or the Associate Dean Teaching and Learning in your Faculty.

Casual academics are welcome to participate in workshop sessions in the Student learning and teaching approaches and Course design and assessment subjects in the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching and Learning. Please check the course timetable for session dates. Contact Enza.Mirabella@uts.edu.au, or 9514 1669 if you are interested in participating. Casuals may formally enrol in the course if they can confirm that they will have teaching commitments during their enrolment (minimum one year).

This IML website includes a range of online resources and materials which are relevant to casual academics:
